Dear Tourism Colleague,
Serious about golf...
... or maybe not so serious ...
... don't even have a handicap yet ? (let me get back to you on this)
We've got golfing for everybody!!
South African golf courses are renowned for being marvellously beautiful. Of course
they are world class. South Africa also has good weather for golf. Lots
of sunshine all year around, although in the winter period, in the
Cape, those glorious days may be interrupted by rains, usually not
lasting for more than a couple of days though.
There
are some famous links golf courses in South Africa, with magic views of the sea and with
mountain backdrops inland. You might be seriously challenged by winds
on these links and can show off your real talents. South Africa is one
of the world's most favoured golf destinations with over 600 South African golf courses
spread all over the country. I will just name a few.
The
South African Airways Open was first played at Durban Country Club in
1924. The course was then 2 years old and very little has changed in
its excellent layout since then.
Durban Country Club will
host the event for the unprecedented 16th time in 2005, Jan 20-23. The
course weaves its way through thick coastal shrub and then, in
contrast, leads into a decidedly parkland feel over some holes. As a
test, Durban Country Club is one of the most demanding. When the wind
blows, a round of 75 is really an achievement.
In Cape Town
and the immediate surrounds there are 28 golf courses. The oldest golf
course in the country, The Royal Cape, hosted the South African
Championships as far back as 1910 and naturally portrays a sense of
history and tradition.
At Sun City the onlooker on the other side of the fence might well be a
giraffe. Gary Player designed this fabulous golf course neighbouring on
the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
On
the Garden Route you just have to play at Fancourt, with four courses
to choose from, close to George. All along the Garden Route there are
some real gems, amongst them Pezula, on one of the heads of Knysna
Lagoon, the high vantage point allowing for majestic panoramic views.
In
an article in one of the many golf magazines that are available today,
I read that not one of the top players in the PGA tour is driving as
far as last year and that the average length will be the same as for
2003, i.e. 241 metres! That is far as far as I am concerned. The
question is has the elite player come as far as he possibly can? For
amateurs there are certainly still a few metres to gain.
Our golf coach Nicolas says: Golf is a whole experience of exercise,
social get-together, fresh air, nature, relaxation and fun. It is also
a matter of discipline and practice, practice...

The whales
are here and they are many. On May 16 the first Southern Right Whale
arrived in Walker Bay. They come here from the cold waters to mate and
to give birth. Peak season September-October. Watching those gentle,
submarine like creatures from the rocks is an awesome experience. They
are huge, 15 meters and 58 tons! And they are close to land.
The Western Cape got a lot of rain first week in August with floods as
a result, but good for the flowers and to fill up the dams. More rain
fell a week later and it seems that the flowers are going to be good.
Daisies, vygies, bulb flowers, proteas will colour the ground and the
mountain slopes. Spring is a magic time. The flowers open about 11 if
it is a sunny day, and start to close at 3. (here in South Africa we
compare them to government employees!!) If no sun, they do not open.
GOLF is very hot at the moment. Book one of our South Africa golf tours now! Winter in the northern hemisphere means full summer in South Africa.
Remember that each day is a rare gift. Enjoy it and use it wisely!
